1812 THE AMERICAN WAR @ ZULU WAR WIP & BLACK POWDER SUPPLEMENT

I have been painting some figures for a couple of friends, Paul Doe and Simon Walker.

For Paul, I have just finished the 28mm Knuckleduster figures from the 1812 American War range. These figures are the Glengarry Light Infantry. The uniform was the same as the 95th except these chaps had muskets and not rifles. I am not entirely happy with the way I painted the flesh on these, as I should have gone a shade lighter. Sorry Paul.

For Simon, I am painting a load of Empress Miniatures Zulu War figures to add to his collection. I have now finished the NNC and I am working my way through the NMP.

I am finding it hard work getting motivated to paint figures for other people ( I don't know how you professional painters do it), so I am having to be quite strict and not start painting anything for myself until this lot is finished, otherwise I will never come back to them.

A couple of pictures of some Zulu War images that I sent to Warlord to use in their Black Powder supplement.

  4. Amazing work as always Pat! I get what you mean about painting for others and I couldn't do it. It's hard enough to get one's own figures finished.

  8. I find painting for others frustrating too, uncharitably all I think of is the miniatures that I want to paint instead. Lovely to to see the Zulu war collection again, always a joy.

Cory, Knuckleduster figures paint up great but it is down to personal choice and if they were for me I would go with Perry Miniatures.

  19. Thanks again chaps.
woolshedwargamer, sorry for the delay as I have been busy at work the last couple of days and not had chance to check the blog.
Yes, the bases are 20mm, the same size as a 1p coin if you are in the UK. The movement trays are from www.warbases.co.uk
    Cheers,
    Pat.

  20. Hi Pat
Love the new pics, especially the lancers running down their foe!
I paint for other people because it pays the bills ;0)
Luckily i've had some great commissions lately that have been a joy to paint. But sometimes it can be soul destroying....
    cheers

  21. Hi Pat,
I have enjoyed your blog for many months now but haven't commented. Please could you let me know how you achieve your webbing colour (and helmets) for the British. I have been struggling getting it just right as you have.
    Many thanks ,Rhys

    1. Hi Rhys,
It was a good few years ago when I painted these and I don't remember the colours that I used. If I was to paint them again I would use the following depending on what you want to portray. Veterans maybe with a more stained look whilst the new arrival with a bright white helmet. Foundry canvas 8B, Vallejo Iraqui Sand or Ivory for your base colour. Citadel Agrax Earthshade (brown wash). When dry, highlight with original colour and keep adding white to the mix until you are happy with the look. This is for painting over a white or grey primer, if you are using black then you will probably need a darker base colour to start with followed by one of the above as a mid colour, then brown wash and highlight.
      I hope this helps,
      Pat.
